Nurse logs are fallen trees that over time, as they deteriorate, come to serve as habitat for animals, insects, and even the growth of new plants, whether of the same species or others that the putrefying mass of the log now has come to “nurse.” In this work the “logs” are constructed for the Burnaby Blooms Festival, planted with grass and wildflowers. Selected areas of existing grass are cleared and seeded with wildflowers.
High Strung is the first work of the Forest Markings studies outside of a forest environment. Here at Deer Lake, the work uses the branching pattern of three birch trees as points of connection to each other and the topograhy resulting in straight lines “drawn” within the tree cluster.
