The Stillness of the Land . Ecosystem Shifts

Location: BC
Date: 2024–ongoing

The monorptints were produced at Kala Art Institute (Berkeley, CA, USA) in 2024 under the aid of its artist residency program.
This project studies landscapes at both macro- and micro-scales. Rooted in research and environmental concerns, it involves ‘drawing’ ecosystems and perceived ecological changes. Recent digital illustrations and monoprints rely on the interplay of figure-ground—a method more conventionally associated with urban analysis—to convey the interrelationships of forest ecosystems. Derived from GPS and field data gathered firsthand in diverse biogeoclimatic ecosystem (BEC) conditions, the evolving works explore the figure (the tangible, the normal focus of perception) and the ground, both cultural and phenomenal (the intangible), which often go unnoticed. These forces together reveal landscapes in tension and offer a reading of ecosystems as dynamic, diverse, and non-linear. I employ abstraction not to present data, but to synthesize ecological knowledge layered with an emotional engagement with place. The desire is to reinforce landscape as a system and set of relations (the intangible), rather than as a force (the tangible).
